Shri Venugopal S Hegde

Venugopal S Hegde was an eminent classical flautist, acclaimed for his soulful music and pure classical rendition of ragas. Intense and luminous were the qualities that distinguished his Flute concerts. His flute revealed a unique style, which was a synthesis of his rich musical experience, vibrant imagination, and spiritual inclination.

Belonging to a richly cultured and reputed family in Karnataka, he received complete support from his family to pursue Bansuri music with passion and dedication.

He started learning bansuri in 1996 in Dharwad from Pandit Venkatesh Godkhindi, an experienced and reputed flute artiste. After the initial learning of bansuri in Dharwad, Venugopal stayed in Mumbai to gain advanced musical knowledge from classical music veterans Vidushi Kishori Amonkar and Pandit Babanrao Haldankar. Later on, in Mumbai, he found his Guru in Bansuri, Pandit Nityanand Haldipur.

Spiritual music had always been Venugopal’s heart’s desire. He eagerly searched for the Bansuri Guru who could fulfill his thirst for pure and soulful Indian classical music. In Mumbai, he found his Guru in Bansuri, Pandit Nityanand Haldipur, one of the legendary and preeminent flute artistes in India, famous for his rich and soulful bansuri music.

The sweet tonal grace, rhythmic elegance, and depth, as well as lucid expression evident in Venugopal’s playing, were the result of his advanced training and guidance under Pt. Nityanand Haldipur. His music embodied the reputed teaching traditions of the Senia gharana, following the same riyaz and commitment that produced great maestros of Indian classical music. Venugopal Hegde’s style of playing came from the celebrated Maihar-Senia Gharana. His style blended gayaki-ang (vocal style) and tantrakari-ang (instrumental style) in the presentation of Hindustani Classical Music.

To the rigors of such a preeminent tradition of Indian classical music, Venugopal added his own dedication and finesse through painstaking practice, creative imagination, and scholarly presentation. Absorbing what was pure, beautiful, and dignified in Hindustani classical music, Venugopal imbibed the difficult discipline and subtleties of the rich legacy he inherited. His Dhrupad-ang alaps and distinctly formatted jod were serene, contemplative, and introspective, while his drut renderings were lilting and filled with fascinating varieties of Tantrakari taans, Layakari, and rhythmic patterns.

At an early stage of his career, Venugopal Hegde received First place in the National Level AIR Music Competition and became an All India Radio Accredited artiste. As a performing artist for over 20 years, Venugopal traveled extensively. He was featured at many prestigious venues for Indian classical music. He was awarded top prizes at many national-level youth festivals in India and also received the ITC Sangeet Research Academy Mumbai Award for promising artists in Hindustani music.

Venugopal performed at several music conferences, including the Mallikarjun Mansur Sangeet Sammelan and Sawai Gandharva Sangeet Sammelan. Music lovers and critics alike acclaimed his imaginative and haunting rendition of ragas. He gave numerous concerts in Dharwad, Bangalore, Mumbai, Lucknow, Pune, Delhi, Jamshedpur, Thiruvananthapuram, Chennai, and many major cities across India. His performances were replete with unexpected, sweet, and breathtaking improvisations.

Venugopal contributed immensely to the field of classical music. Apart from giving concerts all over India and filling people’s hearts with joy and mystifying them, he became a renowned teacher in the field of Indian Classical Flute. Many of his students went on to give individual concerts. He was awarded the title of “Samskritika Guru” in recognition of his immense contribution to teaching Flute.
