Ustad Shafique Khan is a scion of Dharwad Gharaana.

Shafique Khan born 1968 is 6th generation musician in the family of illustrious sitar players, whose contribution in popularizing sitar down the Vindhyaas is unparalleled. He is a grandson of ‘Sitar Ratna’ Rahimat Khan, a Legendary Beenkar and Sitar player who was a disciple of renowned Ustad Bande Ali Khan. He had the fortune of long and traditional grooming from young age from his father Prof. Adbul Karim Khan who was Head of Faculty of Instrumental Music in the Karnataka University College of Music, Dharwad. He also received valued guidance from his uncle Ustad Dastgir Khan and elder brothers Ustad Usman Khan and Late Ustad Bale Khan all well known sitar players.

Naturally his style beautifully reflects the finer aspects of sitar playing of all his mentors. His Meditative Alaap, systematic development of Raaga, magic of Gamak Tans, aesthetic, appeal are hallmarks of his sitar playing. His style is melodious blend of both “Gaayaki Ang’ and ‘Tantrakari Ang’. He is a top Grade Artiste of AIR and Doordarshan and has performed in National Program of Music many times.

He has been conferred with “SURMANI” award by Sur Singar Samsad (Mumbai) Kala Vikas Parishat has honoured him by conferring Bharath Ratna Pt. Bhimasen Joshi National Award 2016. His musical sojourn has taken him to Germany and United States in 2015 and his concerts there have been well received. Sitar Jugalbandi performances with his twin brother Rafique Khan have won encomia from the media, connoisseurs and music lovers. He has served as a member of the Karnataka Sangeet Nritya Academy. Presently he is on the music staff of All India Radio, Dharwad (Karnataka) as A Top Ranking Artist
